    Faculty from WVU Extension Service, WVU College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, and WVU School of Public Health and West Virginia Prevention Research Center received a five-year grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help in Clay and McDowell counties reduce obesity and other chronic diseases related to long-term unhealthy lifestyles.

    Vaping has surpassed all other forms of tobacco use in middle- and high-schoolers. New research led by Mark Olfert, an associate professor in the West Virginia University School of Medicine, suggests if teenagers continue to vape into adulthood, the cardiovascular effects may, by some measures, be as dire as if they’d smoked cigarettes.

    On March 1, from 2-3:30 p.m., the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) will host an Ask the Experts virtual session on preventing childhood obesity. Expert panelists from Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center, West Virginia Bureau for Public Health, West Virginia Prevention Research Center and the CDC Division of Population Health will address the intersection of community based research, policy development and program implementation to prevent childhood obesity.
