Public health means making efforts to ensure people are living healthy lives and living them to their full potential in their community.

What is your hometown?

Bridgeport, WV

What does public health mean to you?

Public health means working within a community to educate individuals on the prevention of disease and promoting healthy lifestyles. Public health means making efforts to create and implement new ways to prevent the spread of disease. Most importantly, public health is making efforts to ensure people are living healthy lives and living them to their full potential in their community.

Why did you choose to study Public Health at WVU?

I chose public health because it was the right fit for me. I was very interested in anything that had to do with the healthcare system. My freshman year, I shadowed nurses, dental hygienists and doctors. I decided that I did not want to be hands on with patients in our healthcare system. Instead, I wanted to be behind the scenes making the decisions that benefit our patients and also prevent them from going to the doctor, dentist, etc. in the first place.

Have any particular members of the School of Public Health made an impact on you while at WVU?

Scot McIntosh and Lauren DevineThese two have made me feel very welcome in the West Virginia University School of Public Health. Any advice or direction I may need, they are always there for me. It is amazing knowing that I always have them lean on. Thank you for making me feel at home!

What would you tell future students about WVU and the School of Public Health?

My first semester in Public Health was absolutely fantastic. Each one of my professors were inspiring and enthusiastic. They helped change my perspective of what public health could be and should be, solidified my goals, and ensured me that public health was the right fit. Most importantly, the staff in the school of public health welcomed me with open arms. If I need anything, I always know where to go and I am never afraid to ask for help. Public health is everything!

What advice would you give to your freshman self?

I would tell that girl to slow down and stop worrying! Your passion will find and guide you when you least expect it.
