Gregory Hand assumes new role at WVU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Dr. Gregory Hand, founding dean of the School of Public Health at West Virginia University, has been named special assistant to the vice president for health sciences.

Hand will step down as dean and assume his new responsibilities effective June 20. In this role, Hand will assist in developing partnerships that enhance the mission and work of health sciences at WVU.

“Dr. Hand has shown himself to be an effective advocate for public health across the state, and I am eager to use his skills toward building partnerships that will change the culture of health for West Virginia,” said Clay B. Marsh, M.D., vice president and executive dean for health sciences.

During Hand’s tenure as dean, the School of Public Health achieved national accreditation for the first time, and expanded its offerings to include an undergraduate program.

Dr. Jeffery Coben, who previously served as the interim dean of public health, will return to that role while a search is conducted.
