School of Public Health faculty honored for service

As part of the School of Public Health’s celebration of the 150th anniversary of West Virginia University, two distinguished faculty members were recognized for their hard work and dedication to furthering the mission of the School. Dean Jeffrey Coben presented Drs. Adam Baus and Christiaan Abildso (in absentia) with Celebration Coins at the 150th event on November 10, as a token of appreciation for members of the University who go above and beyond their daily work.

WVU researcher looks to Iceland to curb teen substance use in West Virginia

In Iceland, drug, alcohol and tobacco use in teens has been “virtually eradicated” as a result of a nationwide push to replace teens’ unsupervised, aimless leisure time with purposeful, organized activities. Now, a West Virginia University researcher is transplanting the program to West Virginia and hoping it takes root. Alfgeir Kristjansson, an assistant professor in WVU’s School of Public Health, is studying data related to teen substance abuse in West Virginia.

Dr. Abildso Awarded Big 12 Fellowship

Dr. Christiaan Abildso, Program Director of Research and Evaluation, was awarded a Big 12 Fellowship to travel to TX and pursue collaborative research. Dr. Abildso to work with Renee Umstattd Meyer, at Baylor University in Waco to pilot test methods for a larger research agenda, including determining what people, places, plans, programs, and policies positively impact rural physical activitiy.

HRC Director named WV Community Development HUB Board Chair

Dr. Tom Bias, director of the Health Research Center, was elected chair of the West Virginia Community Development HUB at last week's annual retreat. Dr. Bias takes over from Dr. Michelle Foster, Executive Director of the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation, who had served as board chair for the past several years.

Drs. Bias and Abildso presented at a Health Impact Assessment workshop in Charleston, West Virginia hosted by the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation and the Pew Charitable Trust. They shared the successes and lessons learned from the Health Impact Assessment conducted by the Health Research Center in Fairmont, WV. Check out a report of that Health Impact Assessment online.
