Health Research Center Co-director Presents at WV Health Impact Assessment Meeting

HRC Co-Director, Thomas K. Bias, PhD, presented at a September Health Impact Assessment (HIA) meeting held in Charleston. The purpose of the meeting was to introduce organizations and communities to the concept of HIA, develop steps to move HIA forward in WV, and identify policies, issues and topics for HIA. Dr. Bias presented the rapid HIA that was conducted by HRC faculty and staff of Fairmont's Bicycle and Pedestrian Connectivity Plan in the Spring of 2014. This was the first HIA conducted in WV according to http://www.pewtrusts.org/.

HRC Assistant Program Director Featured on Doctors on Call

HRC Assistant Program Director, Emily Vasile, was highlighted on WVU Healthcare Report ("Doctors on Call") teaching Chair Yoga. Doctors on Call deals with various health issues and features WVU Healthcare practitioners. The piece began airing statewide in late July on WV Public Television. Ms. Vasile shares yoga with her community in her spare time, with a special focus on teaching to those unfamiliar with the benefits of a yoga practice.

Emily Vasile of the WVU Health Research Center presented at the SE HIA Summit at Davidson College, in Davidson, NC last week. Emily represented the HRC team in a work session about incorporating stakeholder engagement into Health Impact Assessment (HIA). The presentation is entitled: Engaging West Virginia’s Growing Healthy Communities Partners to Identify Opportunities for HIA. The HRC team members include Christiaan Abildso, PhD, MPH; Tom Bias, PhD; Jessica Coffman, MA; and Emily Vasile, MPAff.
