Department Chair 5th Year Review

Purpose

To assist the WVU SPH Dean in the reappointment process of department chairperson’s completing a five-year term through the execution of a 360 degree evaluation.

Scope

To ensure basic position responsibilities are satisfactorily met as a contingency of continued employment as department chairperson in the School of Public Health.

Occurrence

The review will be completed during the spring semester of the Chairperson’s 5th Year:

  1. Assessment sent to appropriate stakeholders by February 15th.
  2. Data received from the assessment is sent to the Dean by March 15th.
  3. The Dean renders a decision on the continuation of the Chairperson appointment for an additional five year period by April 30th.

Process

Overview

The review will include all data anonymously received from appropriate departmental full-time (1.0 FTE) faculty and staff; Assistant and Associate Deans; other SPH Department Chairpersons.

Assessments

Chairperson Responsibilities are evaluated by the information by the Provost’s Office, https://faculty.wvu.edu/policies-and-procedures/academic-freedom-professional-responsibility-promotion-and-tenure/department-chairs-and-faculty-in-other-leadership-positions-protocols-for-appointment-assignment-and-review, and criteria from the Dean of the School of Public Health.

Assessment Areas

1.  Departmental Administrative Structure and Governance

  • Holds regular departmental meetings and strategic planning activities
  • Works with faculty to and staff to achieve consensus on decisions facing the department
  • Respects and represents goals of the SPH
  • Ensures an inclusive environment for faculty
  • Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to experiences of faculty in under-represented categories

2.  Budget and Facilities

  • Manages the department budget allocation
  • Advocates for department budget priorities
  • Develops strategies to acquire external resources from alumni, external grants, industry partnerships and entrepreneurial academic programs

3.  Personnel Management

  • Completes annual reviews for all departmental faculty members
  • Provides faculty members with advice and opportunities for their professional development
  • Communicates SPH and WVU policies and procedures within the department
  • Administers faculty workloads based on individual abilities of faculty members and department, SPH, and WVU needs
  • Involved in faculty recruitment efforts

4.  Curriculum and Program Development, Enrollment and Student Retention

  • Ensures a balance and appropriate offering of courses at all levels by departmental faculty
  • Ensures timely updating of undergraduate and graduate catalogs

5.  Research and Outreach

  • Encourages and supports an appropriate balanced program of research among departmental faculty that involves graduate and undergraduate students
  • Helps guide faculty toward identifying research focus areas by building on existing strengths and leveraging new opportunities
  • Encourages an appropriate and balanced program of service/outreach/extension activities among departmental faculty

“Excellent”; “Good”; “Satisfactory”; “Unsatisfactory”; “Unable to Assess” for each assessment item. 

6.  Overall Leadership (open-ended assessment questions)

  • What are the strengths you have observed in your Chairperson?
  • What is one contribution your Chairperson has made for which you would like to express your thanks?
  • What is one thing you would like to see your Chairperson start doing?
  • What is one thing you would like to see your Chairperson stop doing?
  • What, if any, blind spots does your Chairperson have that you would like him/her to be aware of?
  • Additional comments?

These open-ended questions would be followed by a summative, cumulative rating. 

Assessment Administration

The assessment is voluntary, anonymous, and delivered through Qualtrics.
