Why did you choose WVU?

I choose WVU for my public health education because of the exceptional staff and unlimited opportunities that come with a degree in public health.

How did WVU prepare you to be a public health professional?

Gaining experience and working with the wonderful staff at the West Virginia University Cancer Prevention and Control Center allowed me to expand my horizons, and learn the unique ways public health can make a difference in our communities.

Describe your current role as a public health practitioner.

As a community outreach worker I raise awareness of childhood lead poisoning prevention and healthy homes. Lead exposure continues to negatively impact our children and be one of healthcare’s greatest burdens. It is up to us to get our children tested, educate our communities and strive for a lead free environment for all.

What advice would you give today’s Public Health students?

Don’t give up! It may seem difficult now, but the journey is worth it.

What does public health mean to you?

Public health means striving for the greater good of our communities. It means helping those who don’t necessarily have the resources to help themselves. Most importantly, public heath is providing tools, guidance and education so that every person has a chance of living a long, healthy and happy life.
