Applications open: Student organization founding leaders focus group

A message from the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH)...

Good evening,

I am excited to announce a new opportunity for students to get involved with ASPPH. We are looking for 10-15 students across our member institutions to serve as participants of a long-term focus group investigating options for developing a student organization across schools and programs of public health.

Students will be expected to:

  • Actively participate in Zoom meetings and online community discussions
  • Provide feedback via surveys, emails, or group discussion
  • Advise on issues such as: activities, leadership roles, structure, marketing, and fees
  • Listen to presentations and assist with external research as needed

To be eligible to apply, students must:

  • Be graduating no earlier than Spring 2022
  • Be in good standing with their institution
  • Have a strong interest in unifying students across ASPPH member institutions, including all degree programs and areas of study
  • Demonstrate leadership skills, creative thinking, and problem solving
  • Have approximately 3-5 hours per month to work with the group
  • Be available at either 10am ET or 4pm ET on all the following dates:
    • Friday, March 26
    • Friday, April 23
    • Friday, May 21

Interested students may apply here: https://thisispublichealth.org/studentnetworkapp/ no later than Wednesday, March 10. Students will be notified of their selection by March 19th.

This is a great opportunity for your students to meet students from other institutions, as well as have a voice in the shaping of a potential future organization.

For any questions, whether from you or your students, can be sent to me directly: tseward@aspph.org.

Thank you!

Tracie

FAQs

Can undergraduate students apply?
We are seeking students to represent all levels of public health studies: undergraduate, masters, and doctoral.

Will students be paid for their time?
This is a volunteer activity. However, we see this as a great resume-building opportunity, as well as a chance to connect with students from multiple institutions.

When will this student organization launch?
It depends. Based on the first three focus groups workshops, we hope to have a better sense of what would be interesting to students, and whether it is feasible for ASPPH to support such an initiative. The answer to those questions will help us determine a further timeline.

Will there be any other meeting requirements after those first three dates?
After we determine the scope, feasibility, and potential timeline, there may be additional meetings. Those would be scheduled based on group availability. Ideally, these students will stick with this group until we (assumingly) launch the organization. Assuming we do launch a group, these students who helped build it would have the opportunity to become its’ first leaders.

Are there any requirements for the spring semester outside of those three meeting dates?
Not officially. However, there will likely be opportunities to do some research and bring the information back to the group. Hence the requirement for 3-5 hours per month as opposed to just the one-hour meeting. Any additional support would be completed on the student’s time.

I can’t make one of the meeting dates. Can I still apply?
We may be able to work with you if you are only missing one. Please make sure to note the date that you cannot make in the text of one of your responses on the application form. Note: all else being equal, priority will go to students who are available for all three dates.

I have a question that wasn’t addressed, who should I contact?
