Benefit aids Fistula Foundation

Rhythm and Brews will host a jazz and swing benefit for the Fistula Foundation at 7 p.m. Monday.

    This organization provides surgeries for obstetric fistula, a tragic problem in many of the world’s poorest countries, where women give birth without medical care.

    The foundation’s website (fistu lafoundation.org) says, “In these cases, if a woman’s labor becomes obstructed, she will endure days of painful, prolonged labor. Her baby is unlikely to survive. If the woman survives, her body is literally broken by childbirth. Uncontrollably leaking bodily wastes, these women are shunned by their families and communities.”

    The benefit is being organized by the Community Medicine Student Association at WVU and will feature The High Street Jazz band. The WVU swing dance club will provide lessons from 8-9 p.m., followed by music and dancing.

    Although the bar usually only lets in people of legal drinking age, it will make an exception on this night and admit anyone over 18. The $7 cover charge, in addition to a percentage of food and drink profits, will be donated.
