Delta Omega hosts Read Aloud used book sale service activity
The Gammu Mu Chapter of Delta Omega at the West Virginia University School of Public Health partnered with the West Virginia Read Aloud Program to volunteer for their annual used-book sale. The proceeds of this sale help provide new books for school book clubs; literacy kits for local students; and sponsor a reading program at the Bartlett House, a local homeless shelter. This sale provides the additional benefit of improving literacy access for the community with inexpensive books. We began our event by educating volunteers about the importance of health literacy and then assisted with unloading, sorting, and organizing donated books to prepare for the sale. Thus, this service opportunity not only gave our chapter the ability to serve the community, but also provided an opportunity to increase education and literacy among a vulnerable population.
