DIRECTOR'S NOTE: August 12, 2016

In two weeks, my fourteen year old nephew will perform for the first time with his high school marching band. He plays the trombone, an instrument he chose two years ago. I am so proud of that kid and I hope he sticks with it. Many years ago, when I was a little younger than he is now, I joined the band in school, playing the flute.  I enjoyed playing during class but didn’t really like practicing every night.  Other things kept drawing my focus away and by the end of the year, I set the flute aside. That is one of my few regrets in life.  Although music stills plays a big part in my life, I wish I had the ability to play an instrument, to make music myself.

Thanks to OLLI, I may have a chance to take up the flute again.  This fall, OLLI is forming a New Horizons Band, under the direction of Dr. Lindsey Williams, Visiting Associate Professor of Music Education with WVU.  A world-wide program, the New Horizon Music program offers adults the opportunity to explore their own musical talents. With a focus on education over performance, the New Horizons Music program is ideal for beginners, as well as those of us who haven’t touched an instrument in a few years.

Do you play a musical instrument? Perhaps you’re like me and did so many, many years ago.  Is music-making something you’ve always wanted to try but been a little doubtful?  Now’s the time to embrace the music!  Join us on Tuesday, August 16, for an introduction to the New Horizons Music program.  Dr. Williams will discuss the program and talk about how OLLI members can share in the joy of music-making this fall.  Sessions on Tuesday are at 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Register online at olliatwvu.org or call the office at 304-293-1793.
