DIRECTOR'S NOTE: June 17, 2016

An easy trick that I sometimes use to learn a little something new every day is to investigate what “National Day” it is.  If it’s something that sparks an interest, I can delve a little deeper in the topic, such as Meteor Watch Day (June 30), Cheer Up the Lonely Day (July 11), or Tape Measure Day (July 14). Many of these designations revolve around food though.  As I browse through my Facebook newsfeed every morning, I routinely see announcements stating that it’s National Donut Day or National Strawberry Shortcake Day or National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day. And I will occasionally share and then partake in that particular treat. As I have recently decided to recommit to dropping a few pounds and getting in shape again, I’ve been wondering why I never see National Broccoli Day or Asparagus Day. Maybe those would encourage me in the same way that National Pizza Day does. When I was told this morning that it is National Apple Strudel Day, I decided to do a little research to see if we need to start a National Carrot (or broccoli, asparagus, pumpkin, squash, or cucumber) Day. I was delighted to discover that in addition to Apple Strudel, today is also National Eat Your Vegetables Day!  So, I guess I’ll have a salad for lunch. And try not to think about the fact that Monday is National Ice Cream Soda Day.
