Dr. Lillian Smith joins School of Public Health

Lillian Smith, Dr.P.H., has joined the School of Public Health faculty as an associate professor in the Department of Health Policy, Management and Leadership.

Dr. Smith was formerly with the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health. She held positions as the assistant dean for the Office for Practice and Community Engagement, director for the South Carolina Public Health Training Center and the South Carolina Public Health Consortium, and associate professor in the Department of Health Promotion Education and Behavior. She also represented the Arnold School on the Association of Schools of Public Health’s Practice, Futures Learning and Continuing Professional Education Councils.

Smith earned her bachelor's in English with an emphasis in business communications and her M.P.H. through distance education in prevention science from Emory University, where she was a Merit Scholar. She also earned a certificate in adult and distance education from Penn State University and a doctorate in public health from the University of South Carolina.

Smith has more than 15 years of experience as a public health practitioner in federal grants and community-based organizations, dealing with strategic and program planning, information and dissemination, and evaluation.

“The WVU School of Public Health is fortunate to acquire someone with a strong national reputation for developing community-based programming and state efforts for workforce development,” said WVU School of Public Health Dean Gregory Hand. “Dr. Smith’s presence at WVU should accelerate our progress in statewide public health efforts.”
