Epidemiology posters earn top awards at West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute meeting

At the recent West Virginia CTSI meeting held on Wednesday, May 24, at the Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place, recently graduated doctoral student, Dr. Eric Lundstrom, was voted the top poster presenter by attendees.

Lundstrom was recognized with the “People’s Choice” award with his poster, titled “Assessing the impact of a permitless concealed firearm carry law in West Virginia,” which showed that annual and monthly firearm fatality rates in WV increased significantly following enactment of HB 4145—which legalized concealed firearm carry without a permit. The poster was coauthored by his advisor Dr. Gordon Smith and Dr. Jacob Pence.

Dr. Marie Abate was awarded the best senior or seasoned author award for her poster “Quantifying a potential protective effect of buprenorphine on fatality risk during acute fentanyl exposures.” Coauthors from the School of Public Health Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics included Drs. Gordon Smith and Eric Lundstrom.

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics was also well-represented by additional posters, presented by the following faculty:

  • Dr. Brian Hendricks (“Growing Disparities in the Opioid-Involved Mortality Rate by Race for the United States, 2018-2022”)
  • Dr. Tyler Quinn (“Development and Feasibility of Comprehensive Occupational Physical Activity Measurement for Cardiovascular Health”)
  • Dr. Toni Rudisill (“Police Officer's Opinions of Harm Reduction Programs in West Virginia”)
  • Dr. Brian Witrick (Post-doc, WVCTSI; “Poverty and Population Health - The Need for A Paradigm Shift to Capture the Working Poor and Better Inform Public Health Planning”)

Congratulations to all the presenters!
