FILM FORUM, FALL 2015
Mark your calendars now for this fall's FILM FORUM, on the third Wednesday of each month, hosted by Jim Held.
October 21: "Nebraska" (2013), starring Bruce Dern in perhaps his most acclaimed performance on film. This film was directed by Alexander Payne who also gave us "Sideways" and "The Descendants." When a father and son embark on a journey to claim a million-dollar prize, what begins as a fool's errand becomes a search for the road to redemption. A modern masterpiece.
November 18: A film for autumn...Ingmar Bergman's only collaboraton with the other Bergman - Ingrid! In "Autumn Sonata" (1978), we find a famous concert pianist, played by Ingrid Bergman, confronting her daughter, played by Ingmar Bergman's favorite actress, Liv Ullman, during a long night of confrontation and cathartic pas de deux. Shot in burnished autumnal colors by Sven Nykvist.
December 16: What could possibly be a more Christmassy delight than to see two of the screen's legends having at one another in an old castle? Katharine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole are at their acerbic best in James Goldman's play of "The Lion in Winter," also starring the young Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton as a couple of the boys. With one of my favorite film scores by John Barry, this1968 film was directed by Anthony Harvey.
