Film Forum Notes:

Having survived some “Light and Shadow,” we now turn to recent films that either didn’t play Morgantown or came and went so quickly that no one noticed! See the catalog for the complete list.

Up first is Inside Llewyn Davis [2013] on  October 6:  If you know the work of the Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan [writing, direction, editing], you might have seen Fargo or The Big Labowski, or No Country for Old Men—all three featuring quirky characters, outrageous plot twists and a unique style that has quickly set them apart in Hollywood. They have also produced three seasons of “Fargo” on the FX channel. Violent, yes, but fascinating, real-life murder mysteries involving those same quirky, dumb characters and seemingly clueless police that solve the crimes every time. In this film, Llewyn Davis, played by Oscar Isaac, a rising, much admired young actor, is a folk-style singer trying to make his way in a problematic music world, not to mention his own rather chaotic existence. The character is fiction but based on the real singer, Dave von Ronk. The songs and music in the film were supervised by T Bone Burnett. He is joined by Carey Mulligan, Garrett Hedland, John Goodman, F. Murray Abraham and Justin Timberlake in this Cannes Grand Prix winner from 2013. For those who follow these facts, “Inside Llewyn Davis”  was named the eleventh "Best Film of the 21st Century So Far" in 2017 by The New York Times.  105 minutes.

Special Note: We’re changing our day from Wednesday to Friday at 1 PM so we will have time for the occasional longer film like “Boyhood” or, who knows, “Lawrence of Arabia”!
