In Memoriam: Alice Elizabeth Frost

We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of a dear OLLI member, Alice Frost.

Alice Elizabeth Frost, 84, of Morgantown, passed peacefully with friends and family at her side in the palliative care wing of Sundale Nursing Home on October 26, 2019.

Alice was born in Kent County, England, a daughter to Alban and Kathleen Hingston Low. Born into a military family, Alice traveled to many destinations during her youth, including Iraq and Italy. She attended Saint Anne’s Boarding School during World War II, where she felt safe during the war. She continued there until her graduation in 1954, later attending the University of London, Bedford College, where she received her undergraduate in Classics in 1957. Her life would then take her to Baltimore, MD, where she taught at St. Timothy’s School. There she met Dr. James L. (Jack) Frost, whom she married on August 26, 1961, in Sussex, England. In the mid-1960s, Alice and Jack lived in England until the completion of his commitment to the US Air Force. They then returned to the US and lived in Baltimore. In 1977 Jack and Alice moved to Morgantown, where they would quickly grow roots that would last a lifetime.

Alice received her Master’s Degree in Classics from West Virginia University in 1990 and lectured at WVU for more than 15 years. She shared her time and energy widely in the community. She was a Meals on Wheels volunteer for 30 years and was a founding member, along with Jack, of St. Thomas à Becket Episcopal Church. As a Girl Scout leader for over 25 years, Alice influenced many young lives. Over the years, Alice and Jack hosted international visitors with WVU Council of International Programs. After her retirement, she became a volunteer docent and generous benefactor of the Art Museum of WVU. Always interested in history and the outdoors, Alice served as a volunteer at Friendship Hill National Historic Site in Point Marion, PA. Her love of learning led to her active participation in the WVU Osher Lifetime Learning Institute both as a teacher and member of the New Yorker discussion group. Alice made countless lasting relationships throughout the years, and though well-traveled, always called Morgantown home.

She is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth Yocum (Thomas) of Dakar, Senegal, and Susan Frost of Columbus, OH; one sister Lorna Low (Margaret Barker) Dorchester, England; brother, George Low (Sally) of Hampton Hill, England. Also, surviving are five nephews and their families in England and Maine as well as cousins in Columbus, Ohio.

In addition to her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Dr. James ‘Jack’ Frost.

A memorial gathering to celebrate and remember her remarkable life will be held at the Fred Jenkins Funeral Home on Friday, November 1, 2019, from 4 to 6 pm. A memorial service and reception will follow on November 2, 2019, at 1 pm at the St. Thomas a Becket Episcopal Church, 75 Old Cheat Road, Morgantown WV 26508 with The Rev. Dn. John Elliott Lein & The Rev. Dn. Al Prichard officiating. Alice’s ashes will be entombed at the St. Thomas a Becket columbarium.

The family suggests donations in Alice’s memory to St. Thomas a Becket Episcopal Church of Morgantown 75 Old Cheat Road Morgantown, WV 26508 or the Art Museum of West Virginia University, PO Box 6112 Morgantown, WV 26505
