West Virginia University has chosen Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson as the Campus Read for 2016-17. This year the University is expanding the reading experience beyond first-year students and asking the campus and community to read the book and attend one of the many events that will be held this fall. Because the book addresses themes such as justice, race, gender, criminology, and finding your purpose in life, this book will be of interest not only to students, faculty, and staff, but to members of the Greater Morgantown Community and the state of West Virginia as well. Because events in the past few weeks, (as well as the past few years) have centered around issues of criminology and race, the book is not only timely, but integral to the current nationwide discussion of race.
You need not have read the book to come and enjoy this lively presentation. Dr. Lantz, chair of the WVU Campus Read Committee, will introduce the book, discuss some of its fascinating highlights, and share information about how you can be part of the on-campus intellectual conversation sparked by Stevenson’s engaging, and powerful memoir. (Lantz might even be persuaded to pass out a few free books to attendees!)
About the Instructor: Dr. Susan Jennings Lantz is a Teaching Assistant Professor of Marketing at WVU. She teaches classes in First Year Seminar, Business Communication, and Success Strategies for the College of Business and Economics. When she isn't teaching, writing, or training, she can be found at home with her husband, 12 year-old-twin sons, and 81 year-old mother, discussing films, books, and other types of popular culture.
