How do you define public health?
To me, public health is the prevention of disease and promotion of health. Public health is about caring about the people around us enough to want to see them live healthy, meaningful lives.
Why did you choose to study public health at WVU?
I decided to change my major during my sophomore year. While doing some research, I found out about the public health program here at WVU. I felt kind of lost until I found Public Health. After meeting with Janet Hunt and doing some of my own research, I thought the program sounded perfect for me.
Ever since my “Introduction to Public Health” course, I have known this program was right for me. I enjoyed what I was learning and found that the coursework came easier to me because I was so interested in the material.
Also, I really do care about people, and I think a big part of public health is caring about people and wanting to help them live better and healthier lives.
How have your experiences here prepared you for your future?
WVU and the School of Public Health have given me a well-rounded education. I believe the School of Public Health has given me the skills and knowledge needed to go out into the community and work effectively and make a difference. I plan to take what I have learned here and use it to help my community and state.
What do you want to do after graduation?
Ultimately, I want to be in a position where I can help others and make a difference in their lives. I have been applying to patient navigator positions and other public health positions in the Morgantown area. I’m looking forward to working in a position related to public health where I can finally apply the skills and knowledge I have gained during my time at WVU.
What is your advice to future public health students?
Go to class, take notes, pay attention and keep an open mind. Don’t be afraid to talk to your professors and seek help because they really do care about you and want you to succeed!
WVU is a fantastic school, and the School of Public Health is full of so many great opportunities and you will meet so many great people through this program. Public health is so diverse – there is something for everyone.
What will you always remember from your time at WVU?
I will always remember the friendships I’ve made through classes and my job at the downtown campus bookstore, and I will always remember the incredible professors I have had the pleasure of learning from.
What’s your favorite WVU tradition?
Being one big Mountaineer family.
