OLLI at WVU is forming a New Horizons Band!
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at West Virginia University (OLLI at WVU) is forming a New Horizons Band, under the direction of Dr. Lindsey Williams. Information sessions will be held on Tuesday, August 16, at 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. at the Mountaineer Mall in Morgantown for anyone interested in learning more about the band and music education. Please note: This course has been rescheduled from its originally scheduled date on Tuesday, July 12.
With a focus on education, New Horizons Music programs provide entry points to music making for adults who have a desire to learn to play an instrument or wish to refresh their skills from years past. Founded by Dr. Roy Ernst in 1991, the first program was located in Rochester, New York. The program has since grown to include 173 groups in North America, four in Europe, and four in Australia.
Originally designed for older adults, the program provides such healthy aging benefits as intellectually challenging activity and social interaction. The benefits of music participation are well documented, linking an active musical life with reduced depression, increased memory function, improved physical health, and an enhanced sense of purpose and belonging.
Starting during the fall term, the OLLI at WVU New Horizons Band will be directed by Dr. Lindsey Williams. Currently teaching music education and conducting classes at West Virginia University, Williams is the former director of the Roeland Park New Horizons Band in Kansas.
For more information about joining the OLLI at WVU New Horizons Band, join us on Tuesday, August 16, at 3:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. for the opportunity to learn more about the program concept, meet the director, and try out an instrument. The information sessions are free and open to the public. Call 304-293-1793 to register.
