Post-doctoral community-engaged research position, Wake Forest University

The Wake Forest Clinical Translational Science Institute Program in Community-Engaged Research (PCER), Wake Forest School of Medicine, is seeking to fill the following position: Two-year community-engaged research scholar/research fellow (full-time, staff). 

Program Overview:

The Program in Community-Engaged Research (PCER) is a critical program within the Wake Forest Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), Wake Forest School of Medicine. The function of the PCER is to improve research through engagement and improve engagement through research. PCER works to improve community and population health through promoting and facilitating community-relevant and engaged research, with a particular focus on community-based participatory research (CBPR).

This training program provides methodological and professional skills to conduct rigorous community-engaged research and to disseminate and implement findings from such research to improve health outcomes for community members. Ideal candidates are those interested in pursuing an independent program of community-engaged research and CBPR in partnership with racial, ethnic, sexual, and/or gender minority communities.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Research Fellow/Postdoc will take the lead (with ongoing collaborative mentorship) on planning, developing, implementing, evaluating, and writing and disseminating research findings in partnership with communities. This position combines academic research skills and research management.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

  1. Terminal degree such as PhD, DrPH, JD, MD, DO, PharmD, PA, or DNP.
  2. Prior research experience and demonstrated knowledge of scientific principles.
  3. Strong computer skills.
  4. Strong communication and writing skills.

REPORTS TO:

The Research Fellow of the PCER reports to, works with, and receives mentorship from the PCER Faculty and community partners.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Work with the PCER and community to coordinate the successful and timely completion of tasks that comprise the conceptualization, implementation, data collection, analysis, and dissemination phases of initiatives, including planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating community-engaged research studies, and writing and disseminating study findings.
  2. Work with PCER and community to ensure that all aspects of initiatives and studies are conducted in accordance with protocols and grants/contracts, state and federal regulations and guidelines, and Medical School and University requirements.
  3. Contribute to the writing of scientific papers for publication with the PCER and community partners, including drafting manuscripts and/or literature reviews and opportunities to initiate and lead the writing process.
  4. Participate in the conceptualization and writing of new/additional grant proposals in collaboration with community partners and assist with the budget preparation for these new grants and/or projects.
  5. Coordinate and collaborate as warranted with community partners and Medical School faculty and staff to engage them in the goals of the PCER.
  6. Participate in study-related site visits when appropriate.
  7. Participate in the preparation of progress reports and monitoring quality control.
  8. Participate in preparation of abstracts and posters for research for national and local scientific meetings.
  9. Attend and participate in meetings related to the planning, operation, and evaluation of initiatives, as needed.
  10. Perform other related duties to the work described.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Eligible applicants will have completed a relevant health, mental health, or public health professions doctoral degree or post-graduate degree, and engaged in prior research experiences. In addition, eligible applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • The applicant must be a US citizen, noncitizen national, or permanent resident (Green Card holder) with a terminal degree such as PhD, JD, MD, DO, PharmD, PA, or DNP.
  • Other skills and qualifications are as follows:
    • Prior research experience.
    • Prior experience in community-engaged research.
    • Public speaking experience.
    • Prior participation in the preparation of grant proposals.
    • Peer reviewed publications and/or oral or poster presentations at national meetings.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The PCER is located in Bailey Power Plant in the Innovation Quarter; the Research Fellow will be based in 525@Vine, close to the Faculty Director’s office. This is a collaborative team environment, working with the PCER staff and faculty, research collaborators across the institution, and importantly, community partners.
