PRESIDENT'S CORNER - April 30, 2016

On Monday, May 2, your Board will be welcoming our new Director, Jascenna Haislet and having a get-acquainted meeting and discussion about the direction of our work together in the next year. She will need some time to settle in, but as you are in the mall near our offices, stop and introduce yourself—briefly.

Live your life and forget your age. [Pastor/Writer Norman Vincent Peale]

Planning is under way for our Annual Meeting set for June 22 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Star City. Watch the Bulletin for more information.

Tomorrow, April 30 is the final Met Opera in HD (for this season) at the Regal Hollywood cinema, at 12:55: Elektra with music by Richard Strauss. The cast features Nina Stemme, Eric Owens and Waltaud Meier directed by Patrice Chereau (before he died last year) and conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. Running time is 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Old age is like everything else. To make a success of it, you’ve got to start young. [Fred Astaire]

And speaking of opera, our dear friend and colleague, Jim Benner, has asked me to announce that he is beginning a new series of opera showings at his Evergreen assisted living residence out Collins Ferry Rd. He plans to show one each month beginning with “Carmen,” on Monday, May 2 from 6 – 9 PM. Feel free to drop by to watch and gather some gems of wisdom from Jim.

I’ll never make the mistake of being seventy again. [Baseball manager Casey Stengel]

Today is the day…get those proposals for summer classes in NOW, today!

Finally, a bit of local news…  The Dean at the WVU College of Creative Arts, Paul Kreider, has taken the helm of the board of the WV Public Theater with plans to rejuvenate its role in the community. My friend and colleague Jerry McGonigle will be directing a summer production of Romeo and Juliet for WVPT and I understand there will be a couple more shows—musical—to play at the Met Theater. Dates and titles will be forthcoming. Jerry has offered to come do a one session OLLI class/discussion about his production, so we’ll work that out. BUT, this would be after the play has closed, so watch for an announcement about play dates so if you are interested, you can see the production and then come to hear Jerry introduce you to Shakespeare and this most popular of all of the Bard’s plays.

As long as you can admire and love, then one is young forever. Musician Pablo Casals]

Please enjoy your weekend to the full! After you have early voted!
