PRESIDENT'S CORNER: August 26, 2016
Oops…You have now officially missed your opportunity to take summer classes at OLLI. BUT…the new Fall catalog is on our website and registration will begin September 9.
The King Returns: A great film opportunity is coming on Sunday, August 28 at the Regal Hollywood cinema…The King and I, the glorious Rogers & Hammerstein musical from 1956, will be shown at 2 and 7 PM on the big screen in a restored version. This film has held up really well, so if you have never seen it or haven’t seen it for a long time, for Pete’s sake…GO! The stars are Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr (sadly, the lady that sang for her, Marni Nixon, recently passed away). This is the 60th anniversary of the film, courtesy of Turner Classic Movies.
Film Forum: Our summer film series will draw to a close next week with Michael Moore’s latest film: Where to Invade Next? Love him or hate him, Moore is a tireless advocate for social justice and questioning the oftentimes incomprehensible decisions made by corporations and government leaders. I promise you will find plenty to be entertained by in this film, and probably angered about, so come and be challenged.
And then, the very next week, Sept. 7, we’ll launch the Fall Film Forum with our mini-Robin Williams festival, beginning with Moscow on the Hudson. We’ll return to our showings on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 3-5 PM.
Board Biz: We’re going to be finalizing the Handbook that we approved some months ago, with a few needed edits, so we can get it posted to our website. We’ll also return to our Strategic Planning process and discuss any issues that we’d like to alter as we move forward with new leadership. The Strategic Plan was kind of side-lined due to Angela’s resignation and the Director search, now very successfully concluded. Stay tuned for developments. The Baord can expect to receive copies of all related materials for review by the first day or two of next week (Aug 29-30).
Wisdom is learning from all your experience, which means maybe you don’t make the same mistakes over and over again. And you’re more tolerant. Oh, God, how we need it in the world. Tolerance of other people’s religion, aims, points of view. Just to be able to sit still and hear what the person is saying. [Actress Jessica Tandy]
Everyone has a gift for something, even if it is the gift of being a good friend. [Singer Marian Anderson]
