PRESIDENT'S CORNER - JUNE 2, 2017

Anniversary Time: I was chatting with Jae the other day when my Good Angel shouted in my ear, “Her one-year anniversary has passed you by, you dolt!” Ooops…yes, that’s right, our Director started on May 2, 2016 and has settled in so well and been so effective that it all seems as natural as toast.  So, next time you’re around the office, give her a hug or a pat on the back or your best wishes. From my perspective, she was just the right fit to help move our program forward so, many thanks, Jae!

June: …may start busting out all over any time now, so be careful out there. The weather should start warming, the trees are leafed out, roads are being paved, and it is not too soon to start reading that pile of summer beach books you‘ve been saving all year. In just a few weeks, we’ll have our annual meeting and lunch at the Erickson Center, an event I really enjoy. I hope as many of you as possible will attend. If you do not have email, please make sure to call in for a paper invitation. The Annual Meeting is also a good time to renew your membership, and this time, it’s just $30, plus the term fee if you plan to take summer classes. We’ll have easy-to- follow forms to help you with that.

Do you like Emily Dickinson? There’s a new film out about her life (A Quiet Passion starring Cynthia Nixon)—who knows if it will play here—so here’s one of her musings about the season…explicate for yourself, please…

Summer has two Beginnings --

Summer has two Beginnings --

Beginning once in June --

Beginning in October

Affectingly again --

Without, perhaps, the Riot

But graphicker for Grace --

As finer is a going

Than a remaining Face --

Departing then -- forever --

Forever -- until May --

Forever is deciduous

Except to those who die –

WVPT: My old College of Creative Arts has taken over management of the W.V. Public Theater. This summer they will be producing 3 shows in the Gladys Davis Theater at the CAC—that’s the smaller thrust-style space we all loved best. First up is that hilarious musical version of “Young Frankenstein,” playing June 8-11 and 14-18. Tickets: 304-293-SHOW or at either CAC or Mountainlair Box Offices. Next up will be A. R. Gurney’s comedy, “Sylvia,” on June 21-25. The final show will be “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” playing June 29-30. We are not planning groups but there are senior discounts available, or make up your own group! At least, in the Gladys, hearing the actors will not be an issue!

Have a lovely, rainy weekend. Movies, anyone?

Jim Held, President (until July 10!)
