Reminder: WVU campuses are tobacco- and smoke-free

As we welcome students, faculty and staff back to campus, West Virginia University reminds everyone that all campuses across the WVU System are tobacco- and smoke-free.

BOG Finance and Administration Rule 5.6 – Tobacco- and Smoke-Free Campus prohibits tobacco use and smoking in any form (including e-cigarettes and vapor products) on University property. The rule applies to the Morgantown campus and WVU’s divisional campuses (WVU Beckley and WVU Keyser).

WVU continues to seek voluntary compliance for the tobacco- and smoke-free campus rule. However, the University also has established several methods of enforcement as permitted by law and in accordance with University policy for students, faculty, staff, vendors and visitors who violate the rule.

A compliance officer will continue to monitor WVU’s Morgantown campus. Further, all students, faculty and staff across all campuses can report violations online. Submissions will be handled with anonymity and used to identify locations on our campuses where the rule is violated.

Enforcement will be fair and consistent, and non-compliance will be addressed in accordance with existing or forthcoming rules, policies and procedures.

Those who receive an initial citation for violating the tobacco- and smoke-free campus rule are eligible to pursue “amnesty” (i.e., removal of the citation from the individual’s record). Amnesty for first-time violations is designed to serve as an incentive for students and employees to complete a recognized cessation program for quitting smoking, vaping or using smokeless tobacco. Visit the Tobacco- and Smoke-Free Campus website for details.

Thank you for doing your part to promote a healthier WVU by encouraging your peers to keep our campuses tobacco- and smoke-free.
