Shots Fired Training

It seems as though “Be safe” has become one of my standard closings of conversations and messages. Although I am usually thinking about travel and road conditions when I say it, sadly, increasing gun violence in schools, theatres, stores, places of worship, restaurants, and other places that many of us routinely visit has given the sentiment a more worrisome weight. We shouldn’t have to worry about simply running to the grocery store, and none of us wants to live in fear. We shouldn’t live in fear.

However, we can take a few steps to help us be safe should we ever encounter violence where unexpected. In light of this, I have arranged for the Morgantown and WVU Police Departments to visit OLLI and share insight into what we can do if confronted with such a situation.

Officers from the Morgantown and WVU Police Departments will present two short programs on Thursday, January 17, from 1:00 – 2:50 p.m. in classroom B.

FLASH POINT: Recognizing and Preventing Violence in the Workplace helps participants learn to identify the earliest signs of trouble and what they can do to help prevent violence from erupting in the first place.

SHOTS FIRED: Guidance for Surviving an Active Shooter Incident will give participants the proper mindset and tools to react with purpose and to maximize the chance of survival in an active shooter situation. SHOTS FIRED covers these critical topics:

  • The Survivor/Protector Mindset… A belief that you can take control in order to “survive and protect”
  • General and specific courses of action to take during an active shooter event
  • What to do when Law Enforcement arrives on scene
  • Guidance for surviving a hostage situation

The presentation is free and open to the public. For more information, call the OLLI office at 304-293-1793.

Please note that the office will be closed during this class, so all our staff may take the training.
