Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. Nicaragua's capital, Managua, is the third-largest city in Central America. The multi-ethnic population includes indigenous peoples, Europeans, Africans, Asians, and people of Middle Eastern origin. The main language is Spanish. The mixture of cultural traditions has generated substantial diversity in art and literature. The biological diversity, warm tropical climate, and active volcanoes make Nicaragua an increasingly popular tourist destination. Nearly one fifth of Nicaragua is designated as protected areas, including national parks, nature reserves, and biological reserves. Nicaragua is bordered by Honduras to the north, the Caribbean to the east, Costa Rica to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
In this service based program, students will fly into Managua, visiting cultural and historical sights, then travel to a village in the state of Masaya where they will work with an indigenous community and stay with our host families. The group makes an excursion to the beautiful Spanish colonial town of Grenada where they will have the opportunity to relax, shop at the markets and boutiques, and boat to an island of monkeys. They will also visit Masaya Volcano. After the village project work is complete and they have a farewell dinner with our host families, students will enjoy free time and reflection at the Pacific beach (Vista Mar).
