WVU-owned macOS devices will be updated to comply with University-Owned Devices Standard

HSC ITS will install NoMad software on all WVU-owned macOS devices to comply with the University-Owned Devices Standard. All macOS devices will be updated with this software on April 11 for accountability of assets connecting to HSC resources and to ensure university password standards are being met.

NoMad is a menu bar application that communicates directly with our Microsoft Active Directory (AD) domain and will synchronize the local password on the macOS device to the WVU Login. Once installed, NoMAD will launch automatically at login and will require your WVU Login credentials when logging in to the macOS device.

The initial password synchronization requires a VPN connection to the WVU network. If you do not run HSC VPN (Global Protect) software currently on your macOS device, go to remote.wvu.edu to establish the connection. When NoMAD is signed in, the menu bar icon will appear green. When NoMAD is not signed in, the menu bar icon will appear black. Please note that if you are connected to a WVU network while onsite, you will not need to connect to VPN to synchronize the passwords.

More information about NoMAD can be found on the IT Help Center's website.

Instructions for Mac Computers Using NoMAD

Mac devices supported by HSC ITS, WVU ITS, Potomac State College, Statler College, Reed College of Media, and some Eberly College and Extension Service computers use NoMAD. To check if your Mac device has NoMAD installed, look at the menu bar in the top right corner. The NoMAD icon looks like the head of a deer.

If your computer uses NoMAD, follow these steps to change your password:

  1. Verify you are connected to the HSC VPN or WVU’s VPN at remote.wvu.edu
  2. Once you are connected to the VPN, visit login.wvu.edu.
  3. Change your password as usual, following the instructions in the Change Login Password article.
  4. Click the NoMAD icon in your computer's menu bar and select Sign In.
  5. NoMAD will open a sync window that says "Your network and local passwords are not the same. Please enter the password for your Mac." Enter your previous password and click Sync.
  6. Your computer login password will now be updated to match your new Login password.
