WVU Student Nurses Association to host health fair April 1 at Mountainlair

The West Virginia University Student Nurses Association (SNA) will host a health fair Friday, April 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Mountainlair on the main floor.

Attendees can receive the COVID-19 vaccine or booster shot; learn relaxation techniques from Dr. Tina Keener; and learn about sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention, including condom administration. Free condoms and dental dams will also be available.

Catherine Myers, a member of the SNA and a second semester junior in the WVU School of Nursing, organized the event to help share health education across campus.

“As nursing students, we’re encouraged to be health educators,” Myers said. “It’s important to reach students all across campus. Health Sciences students tend to have a higher health literacy, so we wanted to reach students who may not be receiving that education or who could use a reminder.”

Nursing students will be on site to administer COVID-19 vaccines. Attendees who receive a vaccine will receive a vaccination card and follow-up information for subsequent doses, if applicable. Vaccination clinics are offered on campus at the WVU Student Recreation Center, as well as other locations in Morgantown.

“We’re also encouraging people to get free STI testing,” Myers said. “The condoms will have a QR code with information about testing at the Mon County Health Department. We can educate people on why you should get tested, and how you can use condoms to prevent STIs and pregnancy.”

In addition to free health education, the event will give student nurses an opportunity to practice in a less acute setting.

“This is a chance for us to see other aspects of nursing and to help impact our community. We want students all across campus to know we care about you and we’re here to be advocates for you.”

If the event is well received, Myers said the SNA hopes to host and expand on additional events in the future.
