New student association provides opportunities in healthcare leadership

Students at West Virginia University who are interested in healthcare leadership now have another opportunity to get involved, gain experience and grow their career. Established by the WVU School of Public Health, the Health Administration Student Association (HASA) began accepting members with the start of the fall semester.

The organization promotes an environment for members to develop professional, personal and social skills that will enhance academic and career opportunities in healthcare administration. Through colloquia, research projects, community service, professional association activities and other endeavors, students will have the opportunity to begin building their experience and network outside the classroom.

“An organization like the Health Administration Student Association is a great way to for students to network outside of the classroom and start building connections,” said Kara Forst, HASA adviser and professional programs manager. “All students interested in health administration, whether they’re enrolled in the School of Public Health or another program at WVU, can benefit from the opportunities provided.”

Led by President Lara Brandfass, the first meeting of HASA will be held Monday, Oct. 18, at 6 p.m. via Zoom. Brandfass invites all students who may be interested in joining the organization to attend for more information.

“We are excited to invite students to join one of WVU’s newest organizations,” said Brandfass. “Joining HASA is a unique opportunity to not only engage with other healthcare administrative professionals in a meaningful way but also help shape our new MHA program. Our HASA officers are dedicated to improving students’ experiences and leaving a positive mark on our local communities."

Brandfass is joined on the leadership council by Vice President Morgan Henson, Secretary Ethan Feldmiller, Treasurer Rachel Baker and Historian Melissa Yeso.

Any student enrolled in the Master of Health Administration program or the B.S. in Health Services Management and Leadership program within the WVU School of Public Health, as well as any WVU student enrolled in graduate coursework with an interest in healthcare, is eligible for membership. Students who are not able to attend the first meeting should submit their contact information to WVU.HASA@gmail.com for inclusion in future HASA communication.
