School of Public Health Speaker Series highlights rural health and community engagement

West Virginia University School of Public Health announces its Fall 2024 Speaker Series. Throughout the semester, the school will host a diverse lineup of external speakers who will give research presentations and meet with students and faculty across the school and University with the purpose of sharing ideas and encouraging collaboration and innovation.

On Wednesday, Sept. 25, Brian Hendricks, Ph.D., and Dovenia Ponnoth, Ph.D., from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine will present "Cultivating Innovation - West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine’s Expanding Research Horizons in Rural Health and Community Engagement.”

The presentation will take place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in HSC South 7608 and will be available on Zoom. All School of Public Health students, faculty, staff and members of the WVU community are welcome to participate.

Brian Hendricks, Ph.D. | West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine

Brian Hendricks is executive director for the Center for Rural and Community Health and an associate professor at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. His research emphasis is on development of place-based public health programming and community-engaged research to address the unmet needs of disadvantaged populations. Relevant to his work, Hendricks also serves as a member on the Balance of State Continuum of Care, which offers funding and services to housing providers in 44 of West Virginia’s 55 counties. Currently, the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine Center for Rural and Community Health oversees large projects funded by the Appalachian Regional Commission and West Virginia Bureau of Behavioral Health and is a proud member of the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute.

Dovenia Ponnoth, Ph.D. | West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine

Dovenia Ponnoth is the associate dean for research and sponsored programs and an associate professor of pharmacology in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs manages the school’s research efforts and supports principal investigators with all project needs including research compliance, human subjects’ considerations and development of extramural submissions as well as post-award compliance. Ponnoth is working alongside investigators at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine to expand its current research enterprise and explore potential for developing new external partnerships. She is also an active researcher with a focus on cardiopulmonary pharmacology and the interaction between reactive airway diseases and development of cardiovascular diseases.
