People in public health have gone on to do so many different things. I knew that no matter what occupation I chose, I can always say I received my degree from an amazing program and school.

What does public health mean to you?

Public health means the opportunity to help and advocate for individuals health and well-being. Public health has a huge scope of possibilities and responsibilities to help communities thrive, and I want to be a part of that.

Why did you choose to study public health at WVU?

I chose public health at WVU, because I heard that it was a program that lead to many opportunities. People in public health have gone on to do so many different things. I knew that no matter what occupation I chose, I can always say I received my degree from an amazing program and school.

Have any members of the faculty or staff influenced you in a unique way?

Audra Hamrick has influenced me in a lot of ways. She has helped me realize that my interests are unique but that it’s alright to take time to find what I love. She has also influenced me in pursuing my love for infant development and health administration in hopes of finding a combination of both professions. Kara Forst has also helped me as an adviser. She has made sure I feel comfortable in knowing that she’s always a shoulder to lean on.

Tell us about your field placement experience or other hands-on experiences.

I am currently interning with Women, Infants and Children (WIC). I observe moms and children during benefit and nutrition interviews. I also call families about the use of benefits and assist in breastfeeding classes. From this experience, I have learned my love for the development of infants, as well as studying the effects of socioeconomic issues on children's mental health and well-being. I have also discovered that breastfeeding is something I am interested in pursuing further by taking certified lactation consultant classes.

What would you tell prospective students about WVU and the School of Public Health?

I would tell students that the School of Public Health is a very accepting program. The school is made up of many professors and advisers willing to guide and aid you with any situation. I would also inform them of the many opportunities and professions they could pursue with a degree from the School of Public Health.

What advice would you give to your freshman self?

I would let my freshman self know that everything will be alright. I would let her know that I will find so many other interests along the way. I would tell her not to rush and that life goes by so fast, so cherish the moments while you’re young.

How have your experiences in the School of Public Health helped prepare you for your future?

The many courses that help you with resume building, networking or internships have helped me prepare for jobs and the job market.

What do you plan to do upon completion of your degree?

I plan to pursue a job in the medical field, hopefully assisting hospital administrators. While doing that I will complete my certification to become a lactation consultant and attend courses to earn my master's degree in health administration. Hopefully, I find a career that involves both of my interests.
