Health Impact Assessment (HIA)

Rapid Health Impact Assessment of Fairmont Bicycle and Pedestrian Connectivity Plan

Project Dates: January-June 2014

Description: The Health Research Center worked with Main Street Fairmont and partners to conduct a Health Impact Assessment (HIA) of their comprehensive Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan for downtown Fairmont, West Virginia. This was the first project of its kind in the state according to the Health Impact Project.

The HIA explored how bike lanes, sidewalks and other pedestrian improvements, as well as increased connectivity to parks, schools, and points of interest can impact health of residents. HIA results were incorporated into the larger Bicycle and Pedestrian Connectivity Plan and used to recommend infrastructure improvements to key decision makers in the community.
