Standards for School Nutrition

Evaluation of WV’s Standards for School Nutrition (Policy 4321.1)

Start date: November 6, 2009

Funding: WVDE Office of Child Nutrition; WV Office for Healthy Lifestyles /CDC

Description: The West Virginia State Board of Education adopted new standards for school nutrition for the 2008-2009 school year, thereby becoming the first state to adopt requirements consistent with the Institute of Medicine’s (2008) recommendations.  The policies addressed food and beverages available to students at all times during the instructional day, and included policies regarding school breakfast and lunch, as well as celebrations, fundraising, and contents of food and beverage vending on campus.  The WVU Health Research Center has conducted two statewide evaluations of the implementation and impact of these policies, which are based on information provided by school administrators, county food service directors, parents, and students.
